Frequently Asked Questions:

Do I have to register my team with the National High School Ethics Bowl, too?
We'll take care of that for you! Once you've registered with the Minnesota Regional Ethics Bowl, we will put in your registration with the NHSEB.

Is there a fee?
Yes, there is a fee of about $125. This fee goes to support the National High School Ethics Bowl.

What do coaches/team facilitators do?
Meet with the team over the course of the semester to help them develop their views on the year's cases and prepare for the regional competition in February. You and your team get to decide everything else --- meeting frequency, duration, and times are up to you!

How much of a time commitment is Ethics Bowl?
That depends on you and your team! We recommend meeting at least twice per month during the season, which runs from October to early February. Some teams meet a little less than that, others meet more!

How big are the teams?
Teams must have at least three students. At most five will be able to sit at the table on the day of the competition, though you can have up to seven on the roster. Each school can have multiple teams, too!

But I don't teach philosophy!
No worries! We do. The UMN Philosophy Department is partnering with all local High Schools to provide lessons and co-coaching to help students prepare for the bowl. For example, our graduate students will join you and your students for a few coaching sessions throughout the year, during which they'll teach a short course on ethics, present some case analyses, and help the students prepare their views. For more distant schools, we will provide teaching resources and work with local colleges and universities to find experienced folks to help coach your team. Once you're registered, we'll reach out!
