What is the National High School Ethics Bowl?
Ethics Bowl competitions provide a supportive, respectful environment that prepares high school students for the intellectual rigors of a college education while giving them the opportunity to think carefully (and philosophically) about meaningful ethical questions.
Every year, the Ethics Bowl season starts in late September or early October, when the year's Case Studies are released. Students then have time to read through the cases, learn about ethics, and develop their views. They have until the regional competition, which is held in February, to prepare.
Our Minnesota Regional Ethics Bowl will be part of the National High School Ethics Bowl (NHSEB) and will follow the same rules. During the match, each team will be given one of the Case Studies they’ve been preparing during the school year. They'll present their view as a team and respond to questions from both the other team and the judges. Points are awarded for clarity of discussion, quality of ethical analysis, consideration of alternative viewpoints, and respectful competition.
The winner of our Bowl will face off against another team in a Virtual Playoff. The winner of that playoff will go on to the National Bowl at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill!
Case Studies?
During the Ethics Bowl, each round is centered around a particular Case Study. A new set of about 15 cases is developed every year, often with current ethical issues in mind. Ethics Bowl cases cover a wide range of issues, from broad social questions concerning immigration, monument preservation, healthcare access, and the like to interpersonal questions about bullying, the interaction between ethics and etiquette, and social media. To see past cases, check out the National High School Ethics Bowl's archive.
